The Gainesville Lady Bulldogs defeated Mansfield and Morrisville last week. The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Mansfield Thursday, Jan. 18, where the varsity pulled out a 38-32 win over the Lions.

“The game was a lot like we expected, with both teams playing position defense and working the ball for good shots,” said GHS coach Morris Jenkins. “We got off to a good start and were able to withstand their second-half spurts. We kept getting good shots and hit four key free throws in the last minute and a half of the game.”

Players scoring for Gainesville were Aspyn Britt 13, Cassie Carlo 10, Shelby Smith 7, Elizabeth Kinworthy 6 and Erin McKinzie 2. Kinworthy led in rebounds with 10. Britt and Carlo led in assists with 3 each. Britt also led the steals column with 4.

Gainesville’s JV defeated the Lions 28-27. Players scoring for the junior Bulldogs were Shayla Wages 9, Liz Kinworthy 7, Teagan Broderick 4. Danni Cummings, Ashley Poe, Gracie Strain and Patience Naegele chipped in 2 each.

“It was a good conference road win for the varsity and the JV,” Jenkins added.

Gainesville hosted the Marion C. Early High School Lady Panthers from Morrisville Saturday, and both the varsity and JV won.

“It was nice to play in our home gym,” Jenkins said. “We were able to create some good scoring opportunities with our press. I feel like this team does a good job of changing defenses, which when we communicate well should help keep our opponents from getting into a good rhythm. We had good overall effort and are still striving to be more consistent in all phases as we move into the later stages of the season.”

Gainesville’s varsity defeated the Lady Panthers 61-22, led by senior Aspyn Britt with 20 points. Shelby Smith added 12, followed by Cassie Carlo with 10, Elizabeth Kinworthy with 7, Natalie Kiger and Shayla Wages with 4 each and Erin McKinzie and Gracie Strain with 2 each.

The JV played a two-quarter game, with the Bulldogs coming out on top 11-7, led by Shayla Wages with 7. Patience Naegele and Gracie Strain scored 2 each.
