Several students from Lutie High School attended the third annual Build My Future Construction Showcase April 17 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield. Math, science and special education teacher Shereen Pettit and school counselor Alisha Favazza accompanied the group of sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Seventy-nine schools from 15 counties participated.

Lutie senior Hunter McCullough said, “If anyone was undecided on what they wanted to do, this gave them a lot of different choices.”

Timmy Henderson, who plans to become a lineman, was excited to get to climb an electric pole.

Alex Lubbers said he especially liked that the event demonstrated a wide variety of careers that are available in the local area.

Students learned about construction and design industry careers through exhibits and hands-on activities such as welding, tiling, bricklaying, framing, siding, roofing, carpet laying and equipment operating.

Colleges and labor unions were also there to offer information on training programs. The event was sponsored by several organizations, including the Ozark Region Workforce Development Board, the Homebuilders Association of Greater Springfield, Springfield Contractors Association, Laborers Local 663, MoDOT, Carpenters Regional Council and the Builders’ Association.
