Woman who killed man at roadside park near Ava gets prison term

One of two women who were charged with killing a man at a roadside park near Ava in 2010 over a custody dispute was sentenced to prison Tuesday in Douglas County Circuit Court.

April Dawn Quick, 32, of Mountain Home, Ark., pleaded guilty in January to second degree murder and armed criminal action in the killing of Phillip Allen Taylor, 43, of Macomb.

She was sentenced Tuesday by Judge John Moody to serve 20 years in prison on the murder charge and 7 years on the armed criminal action charge. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Quick and Aimee Herring, 29, also of Mountain Home were charged with Taylor's killing after the two women traveled to a roadside park near Ava on Sept. 10, 2010 to meet Taylor. Quick and Taylor had three children together. Quick, Herring and the three kids lived together on Hallmark Circle in Mountain Home.

According to court records, Quick was upset because Taylor wanted involvement in the childrens' lives and she was "not happy about him coming back into the children's lives." That's when she and Herring decided to meet with Taylor, court records indicate. The three agreed to meet at the roadside park just north of Ava.

Taylor was found dead at the roadside park. He had been stabbed in the back, torso, neck and head. He had also been shot in the head.

Herring also entered a guilty plea to second degree murder and first degree robbery in June 2011. She was sentenced in August 2011 to 15 years on the murder charge and 10 years on the robbery charge. The sentences are to run concurrently.
